hypnobirth

Birth can be a beautiful, powerful, and peaceful rite of passage. HypnoBirthing® is a childbirth education course rooted in the mind body connection. You’ll learn birthing basics, along with tools and techniques to help you cultivate an empowering and positive birth experience.

what is hypnobirthing?

For most of their lives, women have been inundated with negative stories of birth experiences. These negative stories perpetuate fear of the birthing process, leading bodies to become more tense which prohibits them from performing a normal physiological function — giving birth. It’s time to change this! Women who go through this program learn to trust that their bodies know how to bring their babies into the world in a powerfully calm and gentle way.

HypnoBirthing is both a philosophy and technique that prepares a woman for an empowering and positive birth experience. The program focuses on the mental, physical, and emotional well-being of the mother, her birth partner (if applicable), and the baby. The five week course includes breathing, relaxation, visualization, meditative practice, and attention to nutrition.

 FAQs

  • HypnoBirthing — The Mongan Method is taught over a 5 week period, once per week for 2.5 hours. Throughout the course, parents are provided with exercises and activities that can be completed on their own time. Practice and repetition are key! Practicing the techniques shared in the class are essential to conditioning your mind and body for a calm birth.

The course is intentionally designed to be five weeks to give parents time to practice, reflect, connect with their baby, and consider their birth wishes. The goal is to prevent information overload, give you time to process and retain the information. Over the five weeks, parents gain a lot of knowledge, release their fears, and become more confident and relaxed about birth. All of this takes time to unfold!

  • You can begin HypnoBirthing at any time (even preconception), but most parents begin the program between 20-35 weeks. The earlier you begin, the more time you will have to practice for your birthing day.

  • Yes! The relaxation techniques you learn in class will serve as anchors in helping you stay grounded during birth, whatever course it may take. In addition, the class includes practices that help you connect with your baby. They benefit from your relaxation practices during pregnancy and birth too! The tools and techniques can generally help you connect to your center, which will continue to serve you through the rest of motherhood.

  • HypnoBirthing has been chosen by hundreds of thousands of expecting parents around the world to prepare for the birth of their child.

Yes, birth is unpredictable and every birth takes its own unique path. While not every woman who takes HypnoBirthing experiences a vaginal birth, parents who have taken this course have reported fewer interventions and greater satisfaction.

The HypnoBirthing Institute dispels the myth that HypnoBirth must be a pain-free, unmedicated birth. While we can’t promise a pain-free birth, we do promise to provide you with support, knowledge, and tools for achieving your birth goals, which will be unique to you. The program is designed to give mothers the best chance at having an unmedicated instinctual birth, while also preparing parents to navigate whatever path their birthing day takes.

  • Families of all kinds are welcome in the class! While it is ideal for your partner (if applicable) to attend all HypnoBirthing classes, we understand this may not be feasible. We encourage you to make a plan with your partner that works for you all.

If you do not have a partner, that is not a problem! You can bring any other support person (e.g., family member, friend, doula, etc.).

  • If you are past 35 weeks pregnant but still interested in HypnoBirthing, please contact me to set up an expedited course. We will work together during whatever time is available to prepare for the best possible outcome.

  • This is your choice. HypnoBirthing is a complete and comprehensive childbirth education and you will be well prepared for your birthing day after completing the course.

While hospital classes can vary, most parents report that they focus more on the medical aspects and what to expect from active management of labor and birth.

It is encouraged, though, that you take a tour of the hospital or birth center you plan on birthing at (if applicable).

  • Classes are held virtually via Zoom.

If you are local to the DMV area and would like to request an in-person class in your home, please submit an inquiry.
